Greatfields School Governance:

Overview:

Governors of the School as a Local Governing Board (LGB), meet at least once a term. Their remit is to:

• Ensure clarity of educational vision for the school; to promote the best possible ethos for learning, and to set the strategic direction of the school as it grows
• Hold the Head of School to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff
• Oversee the financial performance of the school, making sure that money is well spent

Greatfields School and Greatfields Primary School

Subcommittees structure

The Local Governing Board, (LGB) is responsible for the Greatfields School (Secondary) and the Greatfields Primary School which opened in September 2024. This is not a through school structure.

The LGB is supported and serviced by 4 subcommittees, independently clerked and comprising members of the LGB, the Headteachers and Executive leadership of both schools. Members of the Senior Leadership Teams (SLT) attend as appropriate.

The Sub-Committees are:

1. Safeguarding, Student Experience and Curriculum and Standards (Secondary)
2. Finance, Operations and Audit (Secondary and Primary)
3. Curriculum, Standards and Safeguarding (Primary)
4. Pay and Personnel (Secondary)

Greatfields Primary School opened in September 2024 with a single year group. Coordinated arrangements for governance are in place between the two schools as follows:

• The Executive Headteacher and Head of School at Greatfields Primary School are members of the Local Governing Board.
• Joint meetings arrangements are in place between both schools for Finance, Operations and Audit and Pay and Personnel matters.
• There are separate subcommittees for Curriculum (Standards), given the clear differences in age groups and related teaching and learning issues. Any safeguarding issues arising at the primary school will be considered within this Curriculum (Standards) subcommittee.

2. Curriculum, Standards and Safeguarding (Primary)

     Scope for this Committee

     This sub-committee considers:

1. The breadth and balance of the curriculum
2. Oversight of assessment arrangements
3. Provision made for SEND
4. Oversight of CPD
5. The impact of Pupil Premium Grant funding
6. Finance, Operations and Audit Committee (Secondary and Primary)

     Scope for this Committee

• Financial management for both schools
• Audit of both schools
• Deployment of capital and other resources for both schools
• Risk management for both schools
• Health and safety for both schools

4. Pay and Personnel (Secondary)

     Scope for this Committee

1. HR Matters and related policies and guidance
2. Staff Personnel issues and related policies and guidance
3. Pay Policy and related guidance
4. SCR
5. Review and amend the policies which come under its remit.
6. To enable governors to meet their duty of care of the staff of the school
7. Recruitment, redundancies and restructure of school staff
8. Training and professional development
9. Staff work life-balance, and well-being
10. Staff absences.
11. Staff discipline grievances, and capability.
12. Whistleblowing process and policy
13. Staff Voice.

Matters relating to the primary school will be dealt with as need arises and with the growth in the school an appropriate accountability structure will be agreed and implanted.

Governors with specific areas of responsibility

The LGB has governors who have volunteered to undertake specific responsibilities within the School:

Safeguarding

These responsibilities include ensuring the school:

• Has an effective safeguarding children policy in place and follows local procedures
• Recruits staff and volunteers in line with safer recruitment processes
• Has procedures for dealing with allegations of abuse made against staff and volunteers
• Has a designated senior member of staff for dealing with safeguarding children issues
• Accesses appropriate safeguarding children training for all staff
• Makes suitable provision for Looked After Children

Health and Safety

These responsibilities include ensuring that:

• The School has a written Health and Safety Policy, that all staff are aware of it, and that it is reviewed regularly
• The School takes all appropriate actions (through a named member of staff) for out of school visits
• All health and safety information is properly displayed e.g. location of first aid boxes, and that all staff are aware of this
• All potential risks in the school to staff and pupil are suitably assessed, and resulting actions recorded, and monitored

Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium is additional funding received by the School from the Department for Education to improve the achievement of children from disadvantaged backgrounds. These responsibilities include ensuring that the School:

• Has an up to date pupil premium strategy on its website
• Is clear about the barriers to educational achievement faced by disadvantaged pupils in the School, individually and in groups
• Has robust evidence to demonstrate the impact (effect) of Pupil Premium funding on the educational attainment of disadvantaged pupils

SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability)

These responsibilities include ensuring:

• The progress of pupils with SEND are closely monitored through reviewing and understanding internal and external data
• An understanding of how the SEND budget is used, and its impact
• Contributing to the annual SEND information report published on the School’s website
